100% Home Compostable Organic Coffee Capsules coming soon!
If you're reading this, chances are you know even small changes make a big difference. In June 2021, for the first time in the UK, you can compost your coffee capsules at home!
When Nespresso introduced the first single-serve coffee machine in 1986, it was hailed as a revolution in the convenience coffee market. Nowhere was this more true than in the UK, where over 83% of coffee drinkers still prefer an instant coffee to the Bean or Roast & Ground speciality coffee - much to our chagrin!
However, with some 14bn Nespresso capsules sold around the world every year, it soon became obvious that the environmental impact of generating so much waste would become a problem for any ethical or sustainable coffee business. Figures showed that only 7% of Nespresso drinkers were actually recycling their capsules, leaving the rest to go to landfill.
In 2018, we launched our own version of compostable & biodegradable capsules made from corn starch. Unlike ordinary plastic or aluminium coffee pods, once you've used them these can be thrown in your organic waste bin provided by your local council. But this still needs the council to provide industrial composting facilities - something which is not available across the whole of the UK.
Today, after two years of continuous testing and research, we are delighted to announce that in the coming months, we will be launching the first Organic - 100% Home Compostable Nespresso Compatible Capsules.
Cristina Talens, Director of Source Climate Change Coffee says, 'We have been testing our plant based capsules, the lids and the pods with our suppliers for over 2 years. Now, we have finally created a coffee capsule that maintains all the quality and freshness of our speciality coffees, whilst being able to degrade naturally after it has been used.’
These will be launching in June 2021 and will be available, across our entire organic single origin range from Rwanda, Nicaragua, Mexico, Uganda and Tanzania. They will be hermetically sealed and retain 100% of the flavour and quality of our speciality coffees.
I’m so pleased to read this! Very keen to recycle the capsules I used when I am in a hurry on a weekday in my allotment compost – meanwhile I’m loving the Gishwati Cloud Forest beans which I am trying for the first time. Give me a good morning caffeine hit without any mid-morning jitters!
