Certified organic coffee

Certified organic coffee has been independently checked to ensure that it follows the standards required to use the word ‘organic’. It is illegal to use the word organic unless the ingredients and product have been inspected and certified by an approved body.
Source Climate Change Coffee is certified organic by Organic Farmers & Growers. They were the first UK organic certification company to be approved by the government and they certify both farmers and food businesses.
Getting independent certification of our organic status makes sense for an ethical business like Source Climate Change Coffee. We want to be transparent and demonstrate our commitment to sustainability across the business. The certificate is an easy way for our customers to see this.
Why is organic coffee sustainable?
Organic coffees are farmed and processed with as few chemicals as possible. The farmers use climate-friendly farming practices and aim to sequester as much carbon as possible through reforestation projects. These increase the biodiversity of their areas and preserve ecosystems. The organic farming practices also improve soil health.
Long term economic and social impact
Organic coffee farmers reap long term benefits from growing coffee sustainably. Not only can they obtain larger harvests but they are also future proofing their coffee by ensuring soil health and local environmental health. Organic coffee can also be sold at a premium, earning them a fair compensation, as yields for organic coffee tend to be lower. Coffee growers can form co-operatives and benefit from exchanging information with other growers and combining their efforts.
Why do consumers prefer organic coffee?
Organic coffee has a number of benefits for the consumer. In addition to being cleaner with fewer chemicals like pesticides or fertilisers, organic coffee has a better flavour. Coffee that is Strictly High Grown (SHG) creates speciality coffee. At higher altitudes there is less oxygen, coffee beans are sustainably grown in shade, as opposed to direct sunlight, and that means that the coffee cherries take longer to ripen. This improves the flavour and reduces the acidity and sugar content of the bean. Organic coffee also has a higher level of antioxidants.
The Organic Farmers & Growers organic standards are Retained Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007, (EC) No. 889/2008, (EC) No. 1235/2008 and Organic Products Regulation 2009. The Organic Products Regulation 2009, as the name implies, regulates the production and description of organic products. The label ‘organic’ can only be used for products that have been produced and prepared in accordance with the standards (Richmond.gov.uk).
